Encouraging active lifestyles through sport

As a company and also through our brands we support a variety of different programmes to help people get more active because we want to make a positive impact on people's health and wellbeing. We offer a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks and aim to give people the information they need to make the right choices for them.

Public Health Responsibility Deal

In March 2011, Coca-Cola Great Britain announced it was becoming a partner in the Government's Public Health Responsibility Deal. We've committed to work in partnership with health professionals, consumer groups and the Government to drive forward collective pledges that encourage active, healthy lifestyles. Our pledges include:

1. Using our local presence to get young people and adults more active

2. Promoting and supporting more active travel amongst our employees

3. Increasing physical activity in the workplace

4. Communicating and promoting the Chief Medical Officer's revised physical activity guidelines

5. Helping to tackle the barriers to participation in physical activity faced by some of the most inactive groups in society

Physical activity plays an important role in building motivation and self-esteem for young people - as well, of course, as helping them stay healthy.

Encouraging young people to be more physically active is a central part of our community approach. We do this by supporting community-based programmes, and investing in research to understand the best ways of encouraging young people to get active more often.

StreetGames

In October 2010, Coca-Cola Great Britain announced a three-year partnership with StreetGames, a national charity that helps young people in disadvantaged communities get active and participate in sports. With Coca-Cola Great Britain's funding StreetGames aims to provide better sporting experiences to over 110,000 young people by:

  • Helping StreetGames grow its network of projects creating more opportunities for young people, including launching into Scotland for the first time
  • Developing new programme of 300 neighbourhood sports festivals, reaching 46,000 people. The festivals give young people the chance to bring their friends and try out some of the sports and activities that are typically offered at a StreetGames session
  • Opening the first ever StreetGames Sport for Change Training Academy, where 100 tutors will deliver 11 new StreetGames training courses to around 6,000 sports coaches.

As the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games approaches, Coca-Cola Great Britain and StreetGames aim to deliver a genuine legacy of increased grassroots sport participation that lasts well after the Games are over.

Special Olympics GB

Coca-Cola Great Britain has supported Special Olympics GB since 1978 and globally, we've been affiliated with the charity since 1968 - supporting the movement through cash donation, in-kind products and marketing services.

Special Olympics GB currently has over 8,000 participants with learning disabilities who benefit from a volunteer-led programme of sports training and competition to help develop their social and life skills.

Through the Coca-Cola Youth Foundation's annual funding, we provide vital running costs for the charity. But our support goes further than that:

  • We provide drinks for athletes and participants at many of their regional and national competitions. - 2009 was the year of the National Summer Games held in Leicester which we were proud to support
  • Special Olympics GB is a charity partner on our loyalty website , CokeZone: we encourage members to donate their points to the charity, which translates to thousands of pounds for athletic equipment.
  • Our employees also invest personal time, effort and passion in helping to run the local Special Olympics sports clubs in Hammersmith & Fulham, London. Money raised by our employees year-round is invested in delivering four sports clubs in football, swimming, athletics and boccia for local people with learning difficulties.
  • In 2010 Coca-Cola Enterprises pledged their support to Special Olympics GB both through cash donations and employee volunteering time
  • Coca-Cola Great Britain gave a team of young footballers from the Special Olympic Unified Football programme the chance to be flagbearers at the England v Algeria match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

In 2010 Coca-Cola Enterprises made a three-year financial commitment to Special Olympics GB. We've been working with them on how to best engage our employees in volunteering and fund-raising. In 2010 we supported their 'Wear the Laces' initiative, which celebrates the International Day of People with Disabilities. At our Peterborough office we are also piloting a programme for employee volunteering at local Special Olympics GB clubs. This pilot will help to show how we can roll-out this initiative across the business in 2012.

Schwim

Schwimming…Free swims with Schweppes Abbey Well

In 2010 we expanded the successful Schweppes Abbey Well, 'Free Schwim' campaign. In return for a special promotional bottle top, the scheme offers consumers a free weekday swim at over 400 participating pools around the country. Well over 55,000 free swims were redeemed in 2010 and the campaign continues until early 2012. As well as offering free swimming, the campaign has also trained 120 new swimming teachers in 2009 and 2010.

Powerade

Take to the Streets

Powerade continues to be the official sports drink of 'Take To The Streets' and the Great Event Series, which includes the Bupa Great North Run. The brand supports and encourages 'Take to the Streets' competitors with training advice online and with free Powerade drinks at the various runs, swims and cycles around the UK

Relentless

Relentless invests in the action sports community, supporting some of the most inspirational professionals in disciplines as diverse as wakeboarding, BMX, surfing, snowboarding and motorsports.  Part of the brand's focus is on sponsoring a wide range of action sports events, such as the Boardmasters surfing competition and the UK Surf Pro Tour, but through supporting specific coaching initiatives such as the Lee Debuse Wakeboarding school and the Ride With Us Tour, Relentless enables the pros to pass on their skills to others.

Active lifestyles
Physical activity is vital to health and wellbeing. We’ve provided over 100,000 free swims through our Schweppes Abbey Well ‘Free Schwim’ programme and we’ve supported Special Olympics GB for over 30 years.

Active lifestyles
You should try to take at least 30 minutes of daily aerobic exercise. If you struggle to find time, try to change your routine to fit it in by getting off the bus a stop early or cycling in to work or school.
