Operations carbon footprint

Before we can reduce our energy use and emissions we need to measure and understand them, along with the carbon footprint of our operations in the UK.

In 2006, CCE calculated the carbon footprint for our UK business for the first time. We expanded this in 2008 to all the countries in which we operate - including Great Britain.

We measure our greenhouse gas emissions using the well-respected Greenhouse Gas Protocol - as developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Our carbon footprint includes:

  • Direct emissions from our manufacturing and distribution sites and our own fleet of vehicles - known as scope 1 emissions
  • Indirect emissions from the electricity we purchase, which is generated off-site by our energy suppliers - known as scope 2 emissions
  • Indirect emissions from our cold drinks chillers and third party distributors - known as scope 3 emissions

For 2010, our carbon emissions totalled 476,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, a reduction of 5.5% since 2007.

The decrease is mainly due to the energy management systems installed in 22% of our cold drinks coolers.

  • Globally, CCE's carbon footprint is 5.4 million metric tonnes
  • UK operations account for approximately 9.3% of CCE's global CO2 footprint.

The tables below show the breakdown of our emissions by source.

Coca-Cola GB carbon emissions 2010:
Breakdown of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
Total CO2e emissions 476,000 tonnes
Direct emissions: Scope 1 52,000
Indirect emissions: Scope 2 69,000
Indirect emissions: Scope 3 356,000
Coca-Cola GB carbon emissions 2010:
Breakdown of emission sources
Total CO2e emissions 476,000 tonnes
Manufacturing and distribution** (total) 21%
Cold drinks equipment 68%
CCE vehicle fleet 4%
Other business travel 0.2%
3rd party distribution 6%

These figures show that the main source of emissions within CCE Great Britain's carbon footprint is our refrigeration equipment, which keeps our drinks cold in the shops where they are sold. Read more about what we're doing to reduce emissions from manufacturing, refrigeration and transport.

Carbon Footprint
We were the first soft drinks company to both measure the operational carbon footprint of our business and the carbon footprints of individual drinks like Coke.
