Before we can reduce our energy use and emissions we need to measure and understand them, along with the carbon footprint of our operations in the UK.
In 2006, CCE calculated the carbon footprint for our UK business for the first time. We expanded this in 2008 to all the countries in which we operate - including Great Britain.
Working with 2007 data, we measured our greenhouse gas emissions using the well-respected Greenhouse Gas Protocol - as developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Our carbon footprint includes:
For 2007, our carbon emissions in Great Britain totalled 504,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent - an increase of 5% from 2006.
The increase is mainly due to changes in the way we calculate our emissions footprint. The new method includes additional greenhouse gases and emissions sources that weren't previously included. Despite this increase in our recorded emissions, CCE did achieve its energy efficiency target for 2007/08.
The tables below show the breakdown of our emissions by source.
| Breakdown of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions | |
|---|---|
| Total CO2 emissions | 504,000 tonnes |
| Direct emissions: Scope 1 | 10.44% |
| Indirect emissions: Scope 2 | 13.68% |
| Indirect emissions: Scope 3 | 75.88 |
| Breakdown of emission sources | |
|---|---|
| Total CO2 emissions | 504,000 tonnes |
| Manufacturing and distribution* (total) | 19.68% |
| Cold drinks equipment | 70.9% |
| CCE vehicle fleet | 4.45% |
| Other business travel | 0.16% |
| 3rd party distribution | 4.82 |

These figures show that the main source of emissions within CCE Great Britain's carbon footprint is our refrigeration equipment, which keeps our drinks cold in the shops where they are sold. Read more about what we're doing to reduce emissions from manufacturing, refrigeration and transport.
