Packaging and Recycling

We are one of the UK's biggest users of packaging. Across our 25 brands we produce drinks in a wide variety of packaging types from single serve 150ml cans to family-sized two litre bottles.  Packaging is our most visible environmental issue and we're working to reduce impacts by lightweighting packaging and increasing its recycled content.  We're also encouraging consumers to recycle more.

Packaging plays an essential role in delivering our products safely and conveniently to our customers. As one of the largest users of packaging in Great Britain we know we have a considerable impact and responsibility in this area. We believe that our packaging should not be classed as waste, but a valuable resource that can be used again and again through recycling.

We work in partnership with suppliers, customers and other to limit the environmental impact of our packaging.  This work splits into three key areas:

  1. Reducing the weight of our packaging.
  2. Using recycled content in our packaging.
  3. Recycling our waste and encouraging consumers to recycle.

The materials we use

In Great Britain, we purchased 388,000 tonnes of raw materials in 2010. This included:

  • Ingredients - such as sugar, fruit juice and CO2.
  • Packaging materials - glass, aluminium and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastic, as well as materials such as cardboard, shrink-wrap and film as secondary packaging for safe transportation.
  • In 2010, the total amount of packaging we used was 145,702, a 20% reduction since 2007.
  • By the end of 2010 we averaged 14% of recycled PET (rPET) in our packaging

Recycling
We currently recycle or recover 99.9% of our factory waste and 5 of our manufacturing sites are zero waste; Wakefield, Milton Keynes, Edmonton , Sidcup and East Kilbride.

Recycling
Think about what you throw in the bin - separate out your rubbish and use your kerbside recycling scheme. If there are no recycling bins when you’re out and about, take your rubbish home with you to recycle.
