Environment
Waste Packaging and Recycling
Packaging plays a vital role in delivering food and drink safely to consumers and it must be robust enough to withstand the rigours of the marketplace. On the other hand, we need to limit its environmental impact. This means reducing the raw materials we use, recycling as much of our own waste as possible and encouraging consumers to recycle soft drinks packaging.
As one of the largest users of packaging in Great Britain (we produce over four billion bottles, cans and pouches each year), we know we have considerable responsibilities in this area.
As such, a lot of work has already been done across our business to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging. This section provides an update on recent initiatives and future plans in three main areas:
1. Reducing the weight of our packaging.
2. Using recycled content in our packaging.
3. Recycling i.e. making sure we use recyclable materials; recycling the waste created during the production process; and encouraging consumers to recycle.
Materials Used
In Great Britain we purchase 361,000 tonnes of raw materials each year. This includes:
- Ingredients such as sugar, fruit juice and CO2.
- Packaging materials (glass, aluminium and PET, for example) as well as materials such as cardboard, shrink-wrap and film that are used for secondary packaging, which enables our drinks to be safely transported to our customers.
