Developing An Industry Approach
We work closely with the Union of European Beverage Associations (UNESDA), the European trade association representing the non-alcoholic beverages industry. Together, we’ve developed industry-wide, voluntary measures such as Guideline Daily Amount labelling which can help tackle obesity in a practical and effective way. These measures are being implemented at a national level and are supported in Great Britain by the British Soft Drink Association.
The Coca-Cola System in Great Britain upholds the UNESDA Commitments to the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. This includes commitments:
- Not to place any marketing communication in any media aimed at children under 12.
- To avoid direct appeals to children to influence parents, guardians and other carers.
- Not to engage in direct commercial activity in primary schools.
- To ensure that a range of beverages is available in secondary schools in a variety of sizes.
- To respect the commercial-free nature of schools by offering unbranded vending machines.
- To increase the choice of pack sizes.
- To provide nutritional information and prominently display the calorie content of soft drinks.
These commitments are regularly monitored by an independent third party that issues reports to demonstrate compliance. The most recent audit in March 2007 showed 99.8% compliance for TV and 100% compliance for print and internet advertising.
