Identifying the key issues

We regularly engage with our stakeholders to make sure that we're addressing the areas of corporate responsibility that matter most.

Our stakeholders include:

  • Consumers
  • Customers
  • Suppliers
  • Government and regulators
  • NGOs
  • Employees

Prioritising material issues

In early 2009, we asked the strategy consultancy SustainAbility to conduct a materiality assessment to identify which of our corporate responsibility issues are most important to our stakeholders, and thus our future success. The research included discussions with both internal and external stakeholders and also took into account our ability to control or influence these issues.

This diagram shows the research results.

Following this exercise, we can show which issues are most important to our stakeholders - presenting both risks and opportunities for our future. We have chosen Tiers 1, 2 and 3 as our priority issues.

These are:

  • Nutrition
  • Water
  • Energy
  • Packaging
  • Marketing
  • Sustainable agriculture

In this we report we have decided to focus on seven priority issues - all of the six above plus Communities, which includes information on our employees. Although Communities falls within Tier 5, we believe it's an important area where we can make a positive difference.

Visit big themes for details about each of these priorities.
