A Safe & Healthy Workplace

Monitoring Our Performance

Health and safety performance is one of our Key Business Indicators. We review performance at a site-by-site level as well as for the company as a whole. Results are communicated to CCE’s senior management team twice a year.

All our manufacturing and distribution sites:

  • Meet CCE’s stringent internal Total Quality Management System (TQMS) standards.
  • Have written codes of practice, procedures and review processes to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Have comprehensive emergency response procedures.

In addition, we aim to achieve certification of our safety management systems under The Coca-Cola Quality System Evolution 3 (for more information on TCCQS - see Marketplace) by 2009. The safety component of TCCQS has been externally benchmarked against OHSAS 18000.

Assessing Safety Risks

We have a safety risk assessment tool in place at all of our manufacturing and distribution sites. We use this tool to identify and evaluate safety risks and to introduce controls to make the workplace safer. We involve many members of staff in the process of developing and reviewing assessments and all staff are made aware of, and are required to comply with, the assessments that are relevant to their working environment.

Health & Safety Training

All new employees receive comprehensive training on our health and safety policies, practices and procedures. All employees also have access to our policies on an ongoing basis via the intranet or via hard copies that are displayed widely throughout our sites.

Our Performance

We are pleased to report that once again there were no fatalities at our sites during 2006 or 2007. Across CCE’s business operations in Great Britain we experienced a total of 66 lost time accidents1 in 2007 and a reportable injury rate2 of 1.1.

Table A - Lost Time Accidents per 100 employees (CCE)
Lost Time Accidents from 2007
Table B - Reportable Injury Rate (CCE)
Reportable Injury Rate from 2007

1 Lost Time Accident – any accident where the person is unable to return to duties on the following day (CCE definition).
2 Reportable Injury – when a person has been off work for three or more days, or where the injury is more serious e.g. a broken bone – these are reportable to the Health & safety Executive (HSE).

We continue to be proud of our track record on health & safety and of the external recognition that we have received for our work. In 2007 four of CCE’s manufacturing sites in Great Britain (East Kilbride, Sidcup, Edmonton and Wakefield) received Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Medals – in recognition of their achievement of having received a minimum of five consecutive RoSPA Gold Awards. A further four of our UK sites received RoSPA Gold Awards. For more information see www.rospa.com
